Question 13 and 14 of Children’s Catechism

Car Pull

Hello friends!

Children sometimes ask, who made God? It’s a great question. The answer is that God did not need to be made because He has always been. He exists in a far different way than we do. We are God’s handiwork. We are dependent on Him. Without His help, we are nothing. Without our help, God is still God.

Self-Existence

God does not have it in Him to go out of existence. He doesn’t run on anything. In our present state, we naturally get older and die; God does neither. He continues forever unchanged.

The Apostle Paul once preached the Gospel to the people in Athens, who had thousands of false gods to worship. Paul said,

The God who made the world and everything in it is the Lord of heaven and earth and does not live in temples built by human hands. And He is not served by human hands, as if He needed anything. Rather, He gives everyone life and breath and everything else.  Acts 17:24-25

What Paul preached was important for at least two reasons. One, in ancient Athens, sacrifices, and gifts offered to the idols were thought of, by the people, as the means to keep the god going.

In other words, for the gods to be good and helpful, you had to keep making offerings. Paul said it’s the complete opposite with the one true God. The God who made everyone, and everything, does not need anything to keep going; rather, He keeps people going.

Two, sadly, some people preach that for God to keep being kind, gracious, and generous to us, we must keep doing something or keep making “sacrifices” (usually they mean giving money) in order for God to keep blessing. In other words, for God to be God, He needs something from us. God then appears not as He is but what they think. When this happens, the Second and Third Commandments are broken.

There is a fancy word, aseity, which can help us. Aseity means God has life in Himself and has unending energy from Himself. The Apostle John says it like this, for as the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son also to have life in Himself (John 5:16). Hebrews 7:24-25, like this, Jesus lives forever.

Don't think of God having an endless battery that keeps Him going. God keeps going; because it's who He is. The good news for you and me? We are always going to be cared for, loved, helped, protected, and never neglected. When things get a little confusing, take heart, God hasn't lost His power or His interest in you. You are His, and He is forever!

Eternal God, unchanging, Mysterious, and unknown.

Your boundless love, unfailing, in grace and mercy shown.

Verse One- Our Great God.

God bless you in all things great and small this week.
