A Prayer for You Today (1)

January 8, 2024

Dear friends,

The first time I read the words below, they came to me as the force of electric shock. To know God as our Father and relate to Him in this way grounds the Christian psyche in genuine levels of peace and security. Father, deeply felt in heart and mind. The Jewish people were given a long list of approved titles for God in prayer. What was absent from that list was the title, Father.

You sum up the whole of New Testament religion if you describe it as the knowledge of God as one’s holy Father. If you want to judge how well a person understands Christianity, find out how much he makes of the thought of being God’s child, and having God as his Father. If this is not the thought that prompts and controls his worship and prayers and his whole outlook on life, it means that he does not understand Christianity very well at all.

For everything that Christ taught, everything that makes the New Testament new, and better than the Old, everything that is distinctively Christian as opposed to merely Jewish, is summed up in the knowledge of the Fatherhood of God. ‘Father’ is the Christian name for God.

–J.I. Packer, Knowing God

A prayer for you today.

May your Fatherly love look on all of us, your children.

May the special need of each one be supplied, the special sorrow of each one mended.

May we be growing, working, joyful Christians as children whose Father is in heaven.

Work, Father, work mightily! Your church cries to you. Oh, leave us not! We can do nothing without you! Our strength is wholly yours! Come to us with great power, and let your Word have a free course and be glorified.

Father, make us joyful and gracious and heavenly!

Amen.

May you know and feel your Father’s love.
