A Prayer For You Today

Dear friends,

Walter Brueggemann (1933–2025) was a highly respected Bible scholar, writer, and teacher. His work on the Psalms is regarded by many as a must for Bible students. One thing that has helped me often is his dividing of the Psalms into three categories:

• Psalms of orientation, when things are going well, and the rhythm of our life is playing a happy tune.
• Psalms of disorientation, when our lives seem out of control, nothing makes sense, and the outlook is bleak.
• Psalms of reorientation, when the storm has ended, and we are steadily heading back to a peaceful life, calm seas, and a promising outlook.

A prayer for you today.

Dear Father, mercifully receive the prayers of Your people who call upon You, and grant that they may know and understand what things they ought to do in every season of life, and also may have Your grace and power to accomplish them faithfully; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

We set our common life before You. May our working, resting, living, thinking, building, and sharing be a living sacrifice to You. Transform everything, especially the simple things we do, into an act of holy worship for You. Keep us steady, hold us fast, and may You give us peace at all times and in every way.

Father Lord God, thank you for sending Jesus, your Son, to save us and bring us back to You. Thank you, that by faith, we receive His righteousness as our own and can stand before You forgiven, free, with enormous hope.

We ask all of this in Jesus’ name, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.
